In the nineteenth century, as well Ettore Spalletti illustrates in his fine essay on the visual documentation of Italian art - essay published in the History of Art Italian of Einaudi - there is a transition in the history of art. Art historians are beginning to use photography in the first instance along beside and then replacing the engravings, prints. As often happens in the presence of a great invention, the status of photography however, is not immediately obvious. In short it is hard to understand the transition from one instrument to another. This gap is intended to last at least twenty years, ie until about 1860 - taking stock of the key date as 1839 - weighs heavily on the first use of the photo. This is shown by Fox Talbot, as demonstrated also John Ruskin. The show finally Jacob Burckhardt.
